Two Distinct Markets
Zirconium serves two separate industries with fundamentally different specifications. Nuclear-grade zirconium (Zircaloy-2, Zircaloy-4, ZIRLO, M5) requires hafnium below 100 ppm. Industrial-grade zirconium (Zr 700, Zr 702, Zr 705) allows up to 4.5% hafnium. These markets have different buyer pools, different pricing, and different documentation requirements. The Hafnium Byproduct
Every kilogram of nuclear-grade zirconium produced generates hafnium as a co-product — the hafnium must be removed because its neutron absorption would otherwise compromise reactor efficiency. This separation is how the global hafnium supply is produced. Sellers of nuclear-grade Zr often hold associated hafnium material that carries separate, significant value.

The Hafnium Line Divides Everything

The single most important factor in zirconium's commercial landscape is hafnium content. Zirconium always occurs in nature alongside hafnium — typically at a 50:1 ratio — and the two elements are chemically so similar that separating them requires sophisticated liquid-liquid extraction processes. This separation determines which market a given lot of zirconium can serve, and getting it right is the first question in any zirconium surplus transaction.

NUCLEAR INDUSTRY — REACTOR GRADE
Zircaloy-2, Zircaloy-4, ZIRLO, M5, and Zr-2.5Nb are the structural materials of the nuclear reactor core — fuel rod cladding, guide tubes, pressure tubes, and grid spacers. The hafnium content must be below 100 ppm (0.010% maximum) because hafnium's neutron absorption cross-section of ~100 barns would parasitically absorb neutrons needed to sustain the chain reaction. Nuclear-grade zirconium commands premium pricing and has a specialized buyer base: nuclear fuel fabricators, reactor operators, and national laboratories. All surplus in this category carries radioactive material handling and documentation considerations for irradiated material.

CHEMICAL INDUSTRY — COMMERCIAL GRADE
Zr 700 (low-oxygen zirconium, UNS R60700), Zr 702 (commercially pure, UNS R60702), and Zr 705 (Zr-Nb alloy, UNS R60705) are the standard grades for chemical processing equipment — heat exchangers, reactor vessel liners, piping, pumps, valves, and vessels handling acids that destroy virtually all other structural metals. The hafnium content up to 4.5% is fully acceptable for these applications — hafnium does not affect corrosion resistance or mechanical properties. Chemical-industry zirconium has a broader, more accessible buyer base among chemical equipment fabricators and specialty metal distributors.

Connection
Zirconium and hafnium are inseparable in nature — they are the two most chemically similar elements in the entire periodic table, with nearly identical ionic radii due to the lanthanide contraction. Every zirconium ore contains 1–3% hafnium. Separating them is technically difficult and expensive, requiring liquid-liquid extraction using methyl isobutyl ketone or tributyl phosphate solvent systems. The separation produces two product streams: nuclear-grade zirconium (Hf removed to below 100 ppm) and commercial-grade hafnium metal. This co-production relationship means the global hafnium supply is entirely dependent on the pace of nuclear-grade zirconium production — a supply constraint that explains hafnium's dramatic price appreciation in recent years. Sellers of nuclear-grade zirconium material frequently have associated hafnium inventory that carries separate, significant value — we broker both.

Zr 705 — ZIRCONIUM-NIOBIUM
UNS R60705 · Zr-2.5%Nb · Higher Strength

Zirconium alloyed with 2–3% niobium for significantly higher yield and tensile strength (minimum 379 MPa UTS vs 207 MPa for Zr 702) while retaining excellent corrosion resistance. Preferred for higher-pressure chemical process applications, structural components, and equipment where wall thickness reduction is economically important. Also used in nuclear reactor pressure tubes.

The primary form of zirconium metal, produced by the Kroll process (reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium). Nuclear-grade sponge (Hf ≤ 100 ppm) is the feedstock for all nuclear cladding alloys. Commercial-grade sponge (Hf ≤ 4.5%) feeds Zr 702/705 wrought products and zirconium chemicals. The starting point for all downstream zirconium metal products.

Nuclear Material Handling Note: Irradiated zirconium (material that has been inside an operating nuclear reactor) is radioactive and subject to strict NRC regulations governing handling, transport, and disposal. SpecMet Brokerage handles only non-irradiated nuclear-grade zirconium surplus — virgin production overruns, changed fuel specifications, manufacturing revert, and surplus from fuel fabrication operations that has never entered a reactor. Irradiated zirconium cladding from spent fuel assemblies requires a licensed low-level radioactive waste pathway, not a metals brokerage. Zirconium 700 is the low-oxygen commercially pure zirconium grade used when Zr 702-level corrosion resistance is needed with improved ductility, toughness, or formability. By limiting oxygen content to 0.10% maximum, Zr 700 is better suited for applications involving severe forming, cladding, and explosion bonding, where material toughness and deformation behavior are critical.

Like Zr 702, Zr 700 is used in highly corrosive chemical processing environments where zirconium’s stable ZrO₂ oxide film provides exceptional resistance to aggressive acids and alkaline solutions. Its value is not based on higher strength or nuclear-grade hafnium control, but on its lower oxygen content and improved suitability for clad construction and forming-intensive applications.

Surplus Zr 700 most often appears as sheet, plate, strip, or clad plate material from chemical processing, specialty fabrication, or project surplus. Buyers will want to confirm UNS R60700 grade identity, oxygen content, hafnium content, form, thickness, and whether the material is solid zirconium or zirconium-clad steel.

Zr 700 should be marketed differently than standard Zr 702. While both are commercially pure zirconium grades with similar corrosion-resistance profiles, Zr 700 carries added value when the buyer needs low oxygen content for clad plate, explosion bonding, or forming-intensive fabrication. Mill certification confirming UNS R60700 and oxygen content is the key document that separates Zr 700 from ordinary commercial-purity zirconium inventory.

Where Zr 700 is typically selected for lower-oxygen formability and cladding applications, Zr 702 remains the standard workhorse grade for broad chemical-processing fabrication.

Zirconium 702 — commercially pure zirconium (minimum 99.2% Zr+Hf, hafnium up to 4.5%) in wrought sheet, plate, rod, bar, and tube form — is the workhorse industrial zirconium grade for chemical processing equipment in corrosive acid service. Zirconium's corrosion resistance derives from a self-renewing, tightly adherent ZrO₂ oxide film that provides exceptional protection against virtually all mineral and organic acids: it resists hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, sulfuric acid up to 70% at boiling and higher concentrations at lower temperatures, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, and hydrofluoric acid in dilute concentrations — performing in environments where even titanium Grade 2, Hastelloy C-276, and tantalum may be marginal or require review. This makes Zr 702 the standard specification in the fine chemical, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries for heat exchangers, reactor vessel liners, distillation column components, bayonet heaters, and piping systems processing corrosive intermediates and reagents. It is listed in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for unfired pressure vessels, enabling its use in regulated chemical pressure equipment. Zirconium 705 — alloyed with 2–3% niobium — delivers significantly higher mechanical strength than commercially pure Zr 702 while retaining the same exceptional acid corrosion resistance. With a minimum tensile strength of 552 MPa (vs. 380 MPa for Zr 702) and minimum yield strength of 379 MPa, Zr 705 is the specification for chemical process equipment in more mechanically demanding service: higher-pressure reactors and heat exchangers, structural components where wall-thickness reduction is economically significant, and large-diameter pressure vessels where the higher strength-to-weight ratio of Zr 705 justifies its premium over Zr 702. Zr 705 requires stress relief heat treatment within 14 days of welding — a fabrication requirement that must be communicated to buyers. The alloy is also used in defense and aerospace applications where zirconium's corrosion resistance must be combined with structural load-bearing capability. In the nuclear industry, Zr-Nb alloys (in various Nb contents) underpin the advanced CANDU pressure tube specification (Zr-2.5Nb) and have influenced the development of proprietary Zr-Nb cladding alloys (ZIRLO, M5) now standard in modern PWR fuel designs.

Zirconium sponge — the primary metallic form produced by the Kroll process (reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium in a sealed reactor vessel, followed by vacuum distillation to remove magnesium and magnesium chloride) — is the foundational raw material for all downstream zirconium metal products. Nuclear-grade sponge (hafnium below 100 ppm) is the starting point for all Zircaloy and advanced nuclear alloy production. Commercial-grade sponge (hafnium up to 4.5%) is the feedstock for Zr 702/705 wrought products and zirconium chemicals. The sponge appears as a porous, gray metallic mass and is crushed, blended with alloy additions, and consolidated by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) into ingots before further processing into wrought mill products.
